Job Description

The Life Cycle Engineering Department supports the design, construction, and testing of in-service Navy DDG 51 and DDG 1000 surface combatants in multiple locations around the world. Our DDG 51 Engineering team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with HVAC and piping system experience to support the engineering and design of distributed shipboard mechanical systems for Ship Alterations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Performing sizing calculations related to heat load and pressure loss of ventilation and flow and pressure drop modeling of piping systems as well as evaluation of impact to ship margin for Navy proposed changes.
  • Responding to Functional Engineering Analysis Requests, including deriving engineering system requirements from Navy sources, preparing engineering schematics or written direction to detail design, or development of design rules and standards.
  • Developing material requirement documents or specifications for procurement
  • Review and approval of vendor submittals and design products
  • Assist Navy with system troubleshooting and development of changes
  • Interfacing with Navy counterparts and detail design teammates to resolve technical issues and develop appropriate correspondence.
  • Participation in special studies and projects working with Navy sponsors to evaluate ship changes involving replacement of obsolescent equipment, modernization of ship systems, or development of new capabilities.
Required/Preferred Education/Training
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
Required/Preferred Experience
  • 0 to 1 years engineering experience. Experience with design of distributed systems and familiarity with marine and military systems preferred
  • Fundamental understanding and knowledge of fluid mechanics employed in the engineering and design of shipboard distributed systems required.
  • Familiarity with Design of US Naval Combatants and Navy requirements (ship specifications, General Specifications for Overhaul, Mil-specifications, etc.) for distributed system design and analysis preferred.
  • Ability to develop skills required to critically assess technical problems, evaluate potential options, and develop a solution with limited information.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret diagrams, schematics, and blueprints/drawings required. Familiarity with CAD systems and databases desired.
  • Familiarity with shipbuilding preferred.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude toward participation in a team environment and demonstrated ability to function as a contributing engineering team member.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments with competing priorities desired.
  • A broad knowledge of and experience with a variety of computer systems desired including; Excel, Word & Adobe required. Experience with Access, Basic Programming, mechanical system network modeling, and CAD systems (AutoCAD and Catia preferred).
  • This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.
