Trades Section Manager
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Trades Section Manager to support day shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:
Plans, coordinates, and directs activities of work to ensure project goals and objectives are met, to include management of government and/or commercial contracts to ensure contract compliance, customer satisfaction, and profitability through safe and efficient production.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Assignment and direction of qualified general foremen and foremen to effectively supervise and collaborate across trades, construction, and program management to maximize performance.
  • Provide leadership through effective communications, coaching, training, and development and support problem resolution to facilitate improved workflow and work relationships across the Company, as well as ensuring uniform policy/procedure adherence.
  • Regularly monitors projects to ensure work scope, schedule, quality, and budget are well defined and maintained, detecting any elements that would negatively impact production and initiate proactive solutions.
  • Lead safety efforts by setting the example of safety consciousness to include support of EHS/Safety walkthroughs, shop/worksite cleanliness, and ensuring worksites free of hazards.
Additionally, position will:
  • Manage employees though all phases of employment, to include hiring and retention efforts of assigned personnel, developing/delivering coaching and disciplinary actions needed to address performance concerns, oversight (review & approval routing) of personnel administration needs (such as recommendations/handling of change requests facilitated by EANs - pay, reclassification, etc.).
  • Provide oversight across multiple trades/disciplines/projects to ensure execution of deliverables, providing insight and technical feedback where appropriate, and continuous assessment and monitoring for needed materials and equipment.
  • Review PODs and direct priorities to supervision, implement recommendations for subcontracted/contingent support where gaps are identified, and budgets/schedules allow.
  • Conduct progress reviews with production management team, review and submit project manning/hours, EACs, and dates for completion to project/program management teams.
  • Manages and oversees workforce development efforts to include mentorship opportunities, succession plan development, organizational structure, and ensuring assigned apprentices have appropriate support and resources. Reporting progress and needs to senior management.
Qualifications:
  • Must have a Bachelors/Registered Apprentice (grad) and at least 4 years production management experience. Additional 4 years relative experience can be substituted for degree requirement.
  • Must have supervision/management and core experience supporting multiple trades.
  • Must have the ability to understand job specifications, drawings, and corresponding technical references.
  • Must have well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate with employees/leadership/customers and prepare/deliver written reports and correspondence.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
  • Must be proficient in hot work trades and associated paperwork/requirements.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
Travel Requirements:
  • Occasional Travel; 20% or less.
Security Requirements:
  • Must be able to access Government facilities and be DBIDS eligible.
  • Position requires US Citizenship.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
