Job Description

The Claims & Risk Management Analyst is responsible for handling all aspects of Jones Act claims, including crew injury or illness claims whether they remain onboard or are determined not fit for duty. For onboard treatment, the analyst will coordinate with agents, maritime medical consultants, and support the vessel team as needed. Should the ill or injured mariner be deemed not fit for duty, the Analyst will be responsible for administering applicable benefits, handling medical treatment through agents, and hospitals until the mariner is fit to travel. Once the ill or injured mariner has been repatriated, the Claims & Risk Management Analyst will communicate to them the treatment and benefits plan and support them until the claim is resolved. The Analyst will support the Risk Management & Claims Manager, identifying claim KPIs, providing monthly claim status and participating in the monthly claim review. The Claims analyst will consult the MLL Legal Department on any questions regarding administration of maintenance and cure. Additional responsibilities include developing, proposing, initiating, and implementing recommendations to better manage and reduce risk and exposure regarding claims, and to minimize negative impact to the company's bottom line.

Responsibilities

Facilitate Shipboard Jones Act Personal Injury and Illness Claims
Role is responsible for the full life cycle of the claim including:

  • Identify need for medical attention and coordinate care through maritime medical consultants and/or agents for shore treatment until the ill or injured mariner is fit for duty or repatriated

  • Ensure availability to globally operated fleet 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week or arrange appropriate back up while on vacation

  • Communicate the treatment and benefits plan to the not fit for duty injured or ill mariner

  • Process medical insurance benefits for each injured or ill mariner

  • Proactively communicate with injured or ill crew to ensure they are getting appropriate care

  • Act as the injured crewmember's primary point of contact for obtaining information about the status of their claim

  • Work closely with the Risk Management and Claims Manager on overseeing claims process and procedures

  • Consult with MLL Legal for administration of maintenance and cure

  • Communicate with outside counsel as necessary

  • Assist with investigations

  • Analyze the merit of claims, support strategy to resolve claim, and follow general standard operating procedures.

  • Coordinate actions within the organization to mitigate potential damages and minimize risk exposure

  • Perform case management functions to optimize cost efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Support Claims Manager with counsel, and other service providers involved in case management

  • Produce monthly claims reports

Risk Management

  • Analyze data to identify trends and root causes for personal injury and illness

  • Support concepts for risk management initiatives

  • Support implementation of approved risk management initiatives

  • Supports commitment to safety and other selected company standards and certifications

  • Performs other position related duties as specified by management

Position Specifications:

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years work experience in claims administration, preferably marine claims or related experience; or Bachelor's degree with one year of related claims experience or a combination of education and experience previously listed.

  • U.S. Citizenship preferred


Technical Skills and Competencies Required

  • In-depth knowledge of all types of marine claims, preferred

  • Detail-oriented person with strong organizational skills

  • Proficient at data entry

  • Self-starter with capability to handle most situations independently

  • Ability to conduct objective analyses/assessment of claims

  • Excellent advocacy and negotiating skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with individuals at all working levels

  • Good working knowledge of MS Office Products (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and the ability to quickly grasp and work with new systems.
