Position Summary:
KES, Inc. is seeking Mechanical Engineers with knowledge and experience to support engineering and design and Lifecycle support efforts for US Navy Ships and Combatant Craft. In this role, the Mechanical Engineer will join the Combatant Craft Engineering and Design Services Division covering the functional areas of project management, research and development (R&D), science and technology (S&T) development, planning, acquisition engineering, integrated logistics support (ILS), in-service engineering, testing and evaluation, boat inventory management (BIM), and life cycle management for watercraft.
Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Engineer shall perform watercraft propulsion, auxiliary equipment, and systems integration design, including the consideration/analysis of thermodynamics, fluidics, mechanics of mechanisms and structures, failure analysis, systems dynamics, and properties of materials. Auxiliary equipment is defined as those components required for a fully operational watercraft to meet all mission needs. Examples of auxiliary systems include, but are not limited to, raw water, potable water, engine exhaust, fuel, lube oil, air conditioning/handling, compressed air, heating, all fluid systems, and support equipment. The Mechanical Engineer shall perform analysis, calculations and verification of designs for mechanical systems including, but not limited to:
  • Deck machinery systems; Engine sizing; Exhaust sizing; Finite Element Analysis (FEA); Flow rate of air and ventilation systems; Fluid Flow; Heating and Cooling; Hydraulic Systems; Launch and Recovery; Machinery Vibrations; Noise Predictions; Piping System sizing; Pressure drop; Pump and Compressor Systems; Reduction gear sizing; Shaft Bearing loading and alignment; Shaft Sizing; Starting Systems; Static and dynamic loading of deck machinery and weight handling equipment; and Stress Analysis.
Candidate would be responsible for performing the following:
  • Analyze ship as built and/or modification drawings to determine impact of proposed ship upgrades.
  • Coordinate all mechanical work between multiple alterations and integrate with all affected disciplines/teammates.
  • Lead engineers and technicians on ship check activities, such as surveying existing Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, Potable Water Systems, Fuel and Lube Oil piping, Launch and Recovery systems and components, Propulsion systems and equipment, etc.
  • Confirm all engineer and technician design work and interference control plans onboard ship.
  • Expert in ship mechanical construction techniques, terminology and general characteristics (port/starboard, fore/aft.)
  • Design and modify existing mechanical control systems.
  • Answer client design questions and problems with clear and concise answers and cost-effective design solutions.
  • Responsible for checking all mechanical engineering and design personnel calculations as required.
  • Lead mechanical design projects for assigned ship-class.
  • Check all KES mechanical drawings ensuring that they meet government and regulatory body approval requirements and integrate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Responsible for working closely with and mentor electrical engineering and design personnel.
  • May be requested to work at Government Site located at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek/Ft Story (JEBLCFTS).
Education/Licensure/Certifications:
Required:
  • U.S. Citizenship Required
  • Existing U.S. Government granted personnel security clearance or eligibility at the SECRET level preferred
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be willing and able to travel CONUS/OCONUS for ship checks as required.
Preferred:
EIT certificate and/or PE desired.
Experience:
  • Senior Engineer 7+ years of Mechanical engineering and design experience which includes 2D CAD drawing development.
  • Junior Level 0-3 years of Mechanical engineering and design experience which includes 2D CAD drawing development.
  • Must have strong computer skills and be proficient with 2D CAD and Microsoft Excel.
Desired Specialized Experience:
  • Knowledge and experience working with Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Detachment, Code 83 Combatant Craft Group is highly desirable.

Pay Range: $55,000 - $130,000 per year
