Duties, Responsibilities & Other
    Inspector III will monitor the work of contractors and other inspectors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for VDOT roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to highly complex nature, under the direction of a Construction Quality Control Manager or lead.
  • Work will be nearby on and around active highways, roadways, and water/land bridge construction on a design build contract. Nighttime shifts may be required on rotational basis.
  • Must prepare daily detailed and timely reports and maintain daily diaries to document construction progress, inspection and testing results.
  • Reviews less experienced inspector daily reports for proper documentation and testing reports when needed.
  • Measure field quantities and prepare necessary records using mathematical calculations.
  • May be called upon to conduct field-testing such as soil density, concrete field tests, and asphalt testing using VDOT VTM's when needed due to short staffing to determine contractors compliance with contract specifications.
  • Monitor and observe specialized and complex field work which includes excavations, pile driving, storm drain installation, asphalt road surfaces, pile driving, complex rebar and construction field drawings, demolition, grading, tunnel boring operations, and other specialized civil construction works,
  • Job requires study of complex drawings and specification and searching data bases and document control applications to find appropriate specifications and drawings for work being performed,
  • Attends design build prep meetings and assist preparation of inspector document packages to be used for observations of quality control.
  • May support planning and Scheduling work and inspection phases with contractor's superintendent and agency personnel
  • Overseas, supervises, and provide assignments and instructions to more junior and less experienced inspectors
  • Verifies construction of Roadway and Hwy to be in compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications and standards, special provisions and contract documents.
  • Advises contractors, other inspectors, and supervisors of nonconformance, deficiency, issues, and provides reference documents for the same.
  • Track deficiencies and nonconformance and their corrective actions; document in Daily Report
  • Monitors Frequency of testing requirements and assigns materials techs and regular inspectors to obtain tests and make observations as needed.
  • Supervise and oversee Roller Pattern Control Strips for aggregates, pavements, and cement treated aggregates
  • Reviews and inspects asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks
  • Reviews and inspects complex detailed heavy reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement and signs pour card.
  • Reviews lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment
  • Oversees and enforces the installation of erosion/siltation controls
  • Oversees and enforces temporary traffic control zones and traffic control devices
  • Prepares check lists and test reports for work activities
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or applicable field.
  • 4 - 8 years of experience required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.

  • Submits accurate time sheets, mileage and expense reports on time each week
  • Reviews jobsite safety daily and takes immediate action to document and resolve issues
  • Understands OSHA Safety Standards and KCI corporate policies and follows them at all times
  • Maintains all required certifications and participates in training courses as required
  • Understands all applicable industry standards for project and performs all tasks per standards and client requirements
