Overview

This is a full time position for a medical assistant, providing outpatient care for our patients and assisting our physicians in all clinical areas of the practice.

Responsibilities

Triage of incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies and prepare patient for the visit.

Obtain all pertinent records and tests relating to the current visit and scan information into the patient's electronic medical record.

Reviews patient charts prior to appointment to ensure proper documentation/authorization is on file.

Document interventions in the electronic medical record. Review the chart for completeness, test results and billing.

Schedules all patient referrals to include physical therapy and other diagnostic testing.

Respond to incoming calls relating to patient care and document appropriately in the electronic medical record.

Obtain prior authorizations for required medications.
Responsible for reviewing opioid treatment agreement with all new and existing patients.

Responsible for notifying patients when their prescriptions are ready for pickup.

Responsible for obtaining completed Medical Record Release forms from patients requesting copies of their medical records and/or requesting that they be sent to other providers/practices.

Assist with Urine Drug Screenings: collection process & assuring chain of custody.

Assist Medical Receptionist with check-in, registration and check-out process as needed.
Administer injection of medications or immunizations in accordance with approved protocols. Observe patient for any reaction to medications, immunizations, treatments and significant incident.

Patient Education / Self-Management:
Assist provider and nursing staff in assessing barriers in care management for specific patients and providing specific patient education as it relates to pain management and rehabilitation.

Other Protocols and Duties:
Review and update medications on the list- do accurate and thorough "bottle check/pills count" circling those medications needing to be refilled.
Prepare exam rooms for patient visits, restocking of the clinical area and exam rooms. Sterilize instruments when used and maintain medical equipment.

Assist patients with completing required forms.
Complete all "tasks" assigned to individual team (as well as covering for other MA's who may be temporarily absent). This includes responding to patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agencies, medication prior authorizations, patient forms and follow up from physicians. All tasks must be reviewed, addressed and marked appropriately before the close of each business day.
Respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient phone calls should be answered on the same day they are logged in, before leaving for the day. If patient is not home at the first attempt, a notation should be made in the medical record. All patient conversations must be documented in the electronic medical record.

Follow EVMS protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality. Complete annual recertification for OSHA, Blood Borne Pathogens, Compliance, Respiratory FIT and IT policy. Maintain current CPR certification.

MA staff is required to fill in for other clinical staff during vacations and illness and perform other duties as assigned by physicians or supervisors.
Participate in all staff meetings, education lectures and quality improvement activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of a Medical Assistant program and certification (CMA or RMA) is required, or ability to obtain certification within 90-days of employment. Equivalent military training will be accepted. Completion of BLS class and re-certify every 2 years. Experience in a "fast paced" ambulatory setting is desirable, but not essential. Ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks.

Ability to make professional decisions under the supervision of the physicians and licensed nurses.

Copy of active certification is required upon application submission.
